{"id":3482,"date":"2025-06-11T17:07:05","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T17:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/santemonde.org\/2025\/06\/11\/fams-lancement-des-activites-en-rdc-pour-ameliorer-la-sante-des-femmes-et-adolescentes\/"},"modified":"2025-06-11T19:27:57","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T19:27:57","slug":"fams-lancement-rdc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/santemonde.firmecreative.com\/en\/2025\/06\/11\/fams-lancement-rdc\/","title":{"rendered":"FAMS: Launch of Activities in the DRC to Improve the Health of Women and Adolescent Girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After months of careful planning, the Sant\u00e9 Monde team was thrilled to officially launch field activities of the \u201cWomen and Adolescent Girls Mobilized for their Health (FAMS)\u201d project on June 5, 2025, in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/usi.umontreal.ca\/english\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unit\u00e9 de sant\u00e9 internationale (USI) de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This ambitious six-year project aims to transform access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in three provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Kinshasa, Kasa\u00ef, and Kasa\u00ef Central. It is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare (MSPHPS) and is financially supported by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Transformative Project for Over One Million Congolese Women<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FAMS project tackles key SRHR challenges faced by women and adolescent girls in the targeted regions by addressing the root causes of inequalities embedded in gendered social norms.<\/p>\n<p>Its actions are expected to benefit <span style=\"color: #ea6371;\">814,131 women and 454,011 adolescent girls<\/span>, with a particular focus on those in vulnerable situations: young adolescents (ages 10\u201314), women living with disabilities, involved in prostitution, living in mining and border areas, or survivors of violence.<\/p>\n<p>Guided by Sant\u00e9 Monde\u2019s integrated action model, FAMS operates across three interconnected levels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ea6371;\">Strong and resilient health systems <\/span>\u2013 Better-equipped healthcare facilities to deliver rights-based services that are environmentally sensitive and adapted to the fragility of local contexts, particularly in cases of gender-based violence.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ea6371;\">Mobilized Communities <\/span>\u2013 Partnerships with local actors to raise awareness about sexual and reproductive rights and to strengthen the agency of women and adolescent girls.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ea6371;\">Inclusive Governance<\/span> \u2013 Support across all levels of the health system, with increased participation from women\u2019s rights organizations to drive lasting change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Solid Foundations for Lasting Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a budget of CAD 25.6 million, the FAMS project builds on in-depth analyses conducted during its start-up phase to tailor its actions to the specific needs and contexts of each region.<\/p>\n<p>Concrete actions are already underway \u2013 for example, the delivery of medical equipment and transportation to two health zones in Kinshasa affected by the Teke-Yaka conflict, aimed at strengthening the capacity of local health services. This first symbolic and operational step illustrates the project\u2019s commitment to improving access to care from the earliest stages of implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Activities will now intensify in Kinshasa and begin in Tshikapa (Kasa\u00ef) and Kananga (Kasa\u00ef Central), with clear objectives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strengthen access to quality SRHR services<\/li>\n<li>Promote education and awareness of women\u2019s health rights<\/li>\n<li>Support efforts to provide an integrated continuum of prevention and holistic care for survivors of gender-based violence<\/li>\n<li>Foster the empowerment and socio-economic leadership of women and adolescent girls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOur local partners are showing genuine enthusiasm for this initiative, which builds on the strong foundations of the ASSK project while expanding our reach to two additional provinces.
